Imipramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Cajeput Oil interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that cajeput leaf extract can inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) by approximately 30%. Theoretically, cajeput oil may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the gist for imipramine (Tofranil). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear this antidepressant out. Lab studies hint that cajeput oil may slow that enzyme down by roughly a third. In theory, that could let imipramine build up a little more than usual, which might mean more of its typical side effects, things like a dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, drowsiness, dizziness on standing, or a faster heartbeat.

I want to be honest though: this is only test-tube evidence so far, not something proven in people, and imipramine is a drug doctors already dose carefully. I wouldn't panic, but I also wouldn't swallow this oil. If you'd like to use cajeput oil, even on your skin, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Imipramine Used For?

Brand names: Tofranil, Tofranil PM

Imipramine is used to relieve symptoms of depression. Both Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets and Imipramine Pamoate capsules are approved for this use. Endogenous depression — the kind that seems to arise from within rather than a clear outside cause — tends to respond especially well. It may take one to three weeks before you notice the full benefit.

Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets are also approved as a short-term, add-on treatment to help reduce nighttime bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) in children aged 6 and older, after a doctor has ruled out physical causes.
