Evidence from in vitro research suggests that cajeput leaf extract can inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) by approximately 30%. Theoretically, cajeput oil may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break down risperidone. Lab studies hint that cajeput leaf extract may slow that enzyme down by roughly 30%. If that happened in real life, risperidone could clear out a bit more slowly and build up in your system, which might mean stronger effects or more side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when standing, or restlessness.

The important caveat: this is only test-tube and lab evidence, not something proven in people, so the real-world risk is uncertain and likely small, especially with inhaled or properly diluted topical use. Never swallow this oil. Before pairing cajeput oil with your risperidone, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how you're feeling.

What Is Risperidone Used For?

Brand names: Risperdal, Perseris

Risperidone is prescribed for three main conditions: schizophrenia (a disorder affecting how a person thinks, feels, and perceives reality), acute manic or mixed episodes in Bipolar I Disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder — including aggression, self-injury, temper tantrums, and rapid mood swings.

For bipolar mania, it can be used alone or alongside lithium or valproate. It is approved for use in both adults and certain age groups of children and adolescents, depending on the condition being treated.
