Brexpiprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Cajeput Oil interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that cajeput leaf extract can inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) by approximately 30%. Theoretically, cajeput oil may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the simple version. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear brexpiprazole (Rexulti). Lab research hints that cajeput oil may slow that enzyme by roughly a third. If that slowdown happened in a real person, brexpiprazole could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which might mean more of its usual effects, like drowsiness, restlessness or an inner sense of needing to move, dizziness, or weight changes.

I want to be honest about the evidence though. This is only test-tube data, not something proven in people, so it may not matter much in practice. Cajeput oil should never be swallowed anyway. Before using it as an inhalant or on your skin alongside Rexulti, just run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Brexpiprazole

What Is Brexpiprazole Used For?

Brand name: Rexulti

Brexpiprazole tablets are approved for two uses in adults: as an add-on (adjunctive) treatment alongside antidepressants for major depressive disorder (MDD), and as a treatment for schizophrenia. These uses apply to both the generic brexpiprazole tablets and Rexulti.

Rexulti has one additional approved use: treating agitation associated with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease in adults. Rexulti is also approved for schizophrenia in adolescents ages 13 and older. Note that Rexulti is not approved for dementia-related psychosis without agitation from Alzheimer's disease, and it is not meant to be used on an as-needed basis for Alzheimer's-related agitation.
