Propranolol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Cajeput Oil interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that cajeput leaf extract can inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) by approximately 30%. Theoretically, cajeput oil may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the gist for propranolol: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear this beta blocker out of your system. Lab studies hint that cajeput leaf extract may slow that enzyme by roughly 30%. If that held true in people, propranolol could linger a bit longer and its effects could be stronger than expected.

In real life that might look like a heart rate that runs slower than usual, lower blood pressure, lightheadedness, or feeling unusually tired. The good news is this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from human studies, so it's theoretical at this point. Still, since propranolol works directly on your heart, it's smart to ask your pharmacist or doctor before adding cajeput oil, and never swallow the oil.

What Is Propranolol (Cardiovascular) Used For?

Brand names: Inderal LA, Inderal, Angilol, Syprol, Inderal Injection, Half-Inderal LA, Bedranol SR, Half Beta Prograne, Beta Prograne, Lopranol LA, Slo-Pro, InnoPran XL

This intravenous (IV) form of propranolol is used in hospital or clinical settings to treat dangerous heart rhythm problems. It is generally reserved for life-threatening arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) or those that occur during anesthesia.

Specific conditions it treats include fast heart rates coming from the upper chambers of the heart (supraventricular tachycardia), certain arrhythmias caused by digitalis toxicity, dangerous ventricular rhythms that haven't responded to other treatments, and fast heart rates caused by excess adrenaline-like substances during surgery.
