This combination product pairs aspirin with two ingredients that already calm the nervous system: codeine (an opioid pain reliever) and phenobarbital (a barbiturate sedative). Corydalis yanhusuo contains plant compounds that, in lab and animal studies, appear to have their own calming, sedative-like effect on the brain. So the worry here is simple stacking: adding one sleepy-making thing on top of two others.

If they pile up, you could feel more drowsy, foggy, or dizzy than usual, and in larger amounts that can mean slowed, shallow breathing, which is the main danger with codeine and phenobarbital together. This is a theoretical concern, based on how these things work rather than solid human studies, so don't panic. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and never drive until you know how you feel.

Here's the wrinkle with this combo: the codeine in your Phenaphen is actually a prodrug. Your body has to convert it into morphine using an enzyme called CYP2D6 before it can really ease pain. Corydalis yanhusuo may gently block that same enzyme. So in theory, blocking CYP2D6 could mean less codeine gets turned into morphine, which might leave you with weaker pain relief rather than more.

I want to be honest that this is based on lab reasoning, not solid human studies, so it may not amount to much in real life. The aspirin and phenobarbital pieces aren't really driving this concern. If you're leaning on this medicine for pain, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding corydalis.

This combination product contains aspirin, which is the piece that matters here. Aspirin already works by making your platelets less sticky, so your blood clots a bit more slowly. Corydalis contains berberine, and in lab and animal studies that compound also seems to slow platelets down. Stack the two and, in theory, you could be a little more prone to bleeding or bruising.

Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube and animal data, not human trials, so I wouldn't panic. Still, keep an eye out for easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or any unusual bleeding. If you take aspirin daily or have any bleeding risk, run the Corydalis past your pharmacist or doctor first.
