Modafinil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Devil's Claw interacts with.

Theoretically, devil's claw might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that devil's claw might inhibit CYP3A4, although this has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for modafinil. Your body partly clears this wakefulness medication using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, devil's claw appeared to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, modafinil could clear a little more slowly and build up, which might mean stronger effects like a racing heart, trouble sleeping at night, jitteriness, headache, or feeling on edge.

The honest part: this is only lab data, and nothing like it has shown up in actual people, so it's mostly theoretical. I wouldn't lose sleep over it (no pun intended). Still, since strengths vary a lot between products, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before adding devil's claw, just so someone who knows your full picture can weigh in.

Theoretically, devil's claw might increase levels of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research shows that devil's claw inhibits P-glycoprotein, which transports many drugs out of cells. This might increase intracellular levels of P-glycoprotein substrates, although it is unclear if this effect would be clinically important.

Here's the gist for combining devil's claw with modafinil. Modafinil is a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which acts like a little pump that pushes drugs back out of your cells. In a test tube, devil's claw seems to slow that pump down. In theory, that could let a bit more modafinil stick around inside cells, which might nudge up its effects, things like jitteriness, headache, trouble sleeping, a faster heartbeat, or feeling on edge.

The important part is that this is only lab-dish research, not something seen in real people, so we honestly don't know if it matters in your body. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you notice you feel more wired than usual, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
