Here's the gist if you're taking doxycycline for an infection, acne, or rosacea and you're curious about adding devil's claw. In lab dish studies, devil's claw appears to block a cellular pump called P-glycoprotein, which normally shuttles certain drugs out of your cells. Doxycycline is one of the drugs that pump can move. So in theory, devil's claw could let a little more doxycycline linger inside cells.

The honest takeaway: this is only test-tube evidence, the interaction is rated minor, and we don't know if it matters in real people. At most you might notice slightly more of doxycycline's usual side effects, like nausea, an upset stomach, or sun sensitivity. Nothing here is alarming, but it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Doxycycline Used For?

Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline family of antibiotics. It's prescribed for many types of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tick-borne illnesses like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and eye infections. It's also used to help prevent malaria and, in some cases, as a helper treatment for severe acne.

In situations where penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used — due to allergy, for example — doxycycline can step in as an alternative. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.
