Here's the gist with Technivie (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir). Lab studies hint that devil's claw may slow down an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear parts of this combination. If that enzyme gets blocked, levels of the medication could theoretically creep up, which might mean more chance of side effects like nausea, tiredness, trouble sleeping, or itching. Interestingly, ritonavir is already a strong CYP3A4 blocker itself, so it's hard to say what real difference devil's claw would add.

The good news: this is only a test-tube finding and hasn't been seen in actual people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since this is hepatitis C therapy, run it past your pharmacist or doctor before adding the supplement.

Theoretically, devil's claw might increase levels of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research shows that devil's claw inhibits P-glycoprotein, which transports many drugs out of cells. This might increase intracellular levels of P-glycoprotein substrates, although it is unclear if this effect would be clinically important.

Here's the gist with your hepatitis C combo (Technivie). Devil's claw has been shown in lab dish studies to block a cellular pump called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs out of your cells. Since your medication is carried by that same pump, the theory is that devil's claw could let a bit more of it build up inside cells. If that happened, you might notice more of this drug's usual side effects, like nausea, tiredness, trouble sleeping, or itching.

The honest truth, though, is that this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real people, and it's rated minor. Still, because liver health matters here, I'd run any devil's claw product by your pharmacist or doctor first before adding it.

What Is Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir Used For?

Brand name: Technivie

  • The combination of ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir is usually used in combination with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol), but sometimes it is used alone to treat a certain type of chronic (long-term) hepatitis C infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus). Ombitasvir is a hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5A inhibitor. It works by stopping the virus that causes hepatitis C from spreading inside the body. Paritaprevir is a protease inhibitor. It works by decreasing the amount of HCV in the body. Ritonavir is a protease inhibitor. It helps to increase the amount of paritaprevir in the body so that the medication will have a greater effect. It is not known if ombitasvir, paritaprevir, or ritonavir prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
