Why this applies to Riluzole

Riluzole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Diindolylmethane interacts with.

Theoretically, diindolylmethane might lower serum levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro evidence suggests that diindolylmethane can induce CYP1A2. Theoretically, it might increase metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates and lower serum concentrations. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for riluzole (Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan): your liver clears this drug mainly through an enzyme called CYP1A2. Lab studies hint that DIM may speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, your body could break riluzole down faster, leaving less of it in your blood and possibly making it work a little less well for your ALS.

I want to be straight with you, though: this is only a test-tube finding, and it has never actually been seen in people. The interaction is rated minor and unlikely. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since riluzole matters for your treatment, do mention any DIM supplement to your pharmacist or neurologist before adding it.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
