Let me be straight with you here: this is a combination I'd want you to steer well clear of. Phenelzine (Nardil) is a strong antidepressant, and GHB is a powerful brain depressant that slows down your nervous system and your breathing. Stacking the two together can pile up that sedating effect, leaving you overly drowsy, confused, dangerously slow to breathe, or even unresponsive.

On top of that, MAOIs like phenelzine are already famous for risky reactions with many other substances, so adding an unpredictable street drug like GHB raises the stakes even more. Honestly, GHB isn't a safe supplement to begin with. If you're taking phenelzine, please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding anything new, even something that sounds harmless.

GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is a powerful central nervous system depressant that is NOT a safe dietary supplement. In the U.S. it is a controlled substance, and only a tightly regulated prescription form (sodium oxybate) is legal for narcolepsy. Non-prescription GHB can cause coma, breathing failure, and death, and it is also a known 'date-rape' drug — it should not be taken outside of medical supervision.

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
