Green Tea + Methylprednisolone
Methylprednisolone brand names: Medrol, Medrol Dosepak.
Methylprednisolone falls into 2 drug categories that Green Tea can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Green tea might increase the levels and adverse effects of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Green Tea interacts with whole categories of medication. Methylprednisolone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Tea in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Methylprednisolone
Methylprednisolone falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Green Tea interacts with.
In vitro research and case reports suggest that green tea inhibits drug efflux by P-gp, potentially increasing serum levels of P-gp substrates. Case reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) adverse drug reaction database describe increased toxicity in patients taking green tea and certain P-gp substrates.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basic idea with methylprednisolone (Medrol). Your body uses a kind of cellular pump called P-glycoprotein to move certain medicines out of cells and back out of the body. Green tea may slow that pump down a bit, so in theory more of this steroid could hang around. That could mean a little more of the usual steroid effects, things like trouble sleeping, mood changes, fluid retention, higher blood sugar, or stomach upset.
I want to be straight with you though: this is based on lab studies and a few scattered case reports, not strong human research. A cup or two of green tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated green tea extract pills are the bigger question mark. If you take those regularly, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Methylprednisolone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro and in vivo research suggests that green tea can inhibit intestinal CYP3A and induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzymes. However, this effect is unlikely to be clinically significant, as green tea does not appear to affect CYP3A4 activity in humans.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the short version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down methylprednisolone, and green tea can nudge that enzyme in lab studies. The good news is that in real people, green tea doesn't seem to meaningfully change how this steroid works. This interaction is rated minor and unlikely, and the evidence comes only from test tube and animal research, not from actual patients.
Methylprednisolone is an active drug (not a prodrug), so in theory anything that sped up its clearance could weaken it, while anything that slowed it could raise side effects like trouble sleeping, mood changes, higher blood sugar, or stomach upset. But your daily cup of green tea is very unlikely to cause any of that. If you take concentrated green tea extract pills, just mention it to your pharmacist.

About Green Tea
What is Green Tea?
- Antioxidant support
- Weight loss
- Heart health
- Mental alertness
- Cancer risk reduction
Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
About Methylprednisolone
What Is Methylprednisolone Used For?
