Green Tea + Trovafloxacin
Trovafloxacin brand names: Trovan, Trovan Injection.
Trovafloxacin falls into 3 drug categories that Green Tea can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, concomitant use might have additive adverse hepatotoxic effects.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Green Tea interacts with whole categories of medication. Trovafloxacin falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Tea in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
1 of 3Why this applies to Trovafloxacin
Trovafloxacin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Green Tea interacts with.
Green tea extract supplements have been linked to several cases of hepatotoxicity and might have additive hepatotoxic effects with other drugs..
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the concern with pairing green tea and Trovafloxacin. Trovafloxacin is an antibiotic that has its own reputation for being hard on the liver, which is actually why its use became very restricted. Concentrated green tea extract supplements (not regular cups of tea) have been tied to rare cases of liver trouble too. So the worry is simply that two liver stressors stacked together could add up.
I'll be honest: this is a theoretical, anecdote-based caution, not something proven to happen often. Drinking green tea as a beverage is very unlikely to be an issue. Still, if you ever take green tea extract pills, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor, and watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, or belly pain.

ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP)
2 of 3Trovafloxacin also falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP).
OATPs are expressed in the small intestine and liver and are responsible for the uptake of drugs and other compounds. Research shows that two of the major catechins found in green tea, epicatechin gallate (ECG) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), inhibit OATPs, specifically OATP1A2, OATP1B1, and OATP2B1. In addition, green tea has been shown to reduce the absorption of some drugs that are OATP substrates, including lisinopril, and celiprolol.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist for green tea and trovafloxacin, an antibiotic. Green tea's catechins (ECG and EGCG) can block transporters called OATPs that help shuttle certain drugs from your gut into your bloodstream. In theory, that could mean less trovafloxacin actually gets absorbed, so you'd have lower levels working against your infection. With antibiotics, weaker absorption is a real concern because you want enough drug on board to fully clear the bug.
That said, this is based only on lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it's far from certain. Trovafloxacin isn't a prodrug, so it isn't being activated by these transporters. Brewed tea in normal amounts is less of a worry than concentrated extracts. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
3 of 3Trovafloxacin also falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS.
Green tea contains caffeine. Quinolones (also called fluoroquinolones) can decrease caffeine clearance by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's something worth knowing if you're sipping green tea while taking Trovafloxacin. The issue isn't really about the antibiotic getting weaker or stronger. Instead, this antibiotic can slow down how your body clears caffeine, and green tea naturally contains caffeine. Trovafloxacin blocks an enzyme called CYP1A2 that normally breaks caffeine down, so the caffeine can hang around longer than usual.
In plain terms, you might feel more of the typical caffeine effects: jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge. A cup or two of regular green tea probably isn't a big deal for most folks, but concentrated extracts or lots of caffeinated drinks could add up. If you notice these effects, it's a good idea to check with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Green Tea
What is Green Tea?
- Antioxidant support
- Weight loss
- Heart health
- Mental alertness
- Cancer risk reduction
Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
