Here's the simple version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP2C19 to help clear rabeprazole (Aciphex) out of your system. In lab dish studies, concentrated hibiscus extract slowed that same enzyme down a little. If that happened in real life, your rabeprazole might hang around a bit longer and feel slightly stronger. The good news is that rabeprazole leans less on that enzyme than some other acid reducers, and this effect has never actually been seen in people.

Even in the unlikely event it did matter, you'd probably just notice mild things like headache or an upset stomach. A cup or two of hibiscus tea isn't a worry. If you take concentrated hibiscus capsules, just give your pharmacist a heads-up so we can keep an eye on it.

Here's the gist for hibiscus and your rabeprazole (Aciphex). Rabeprazole is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish studies, concentrated hibiscus extract slowed that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let slightly more rabeprazole hang around in your body, which might mean a touch more of its usual effects or side effects like headache, nausea, or stomach upset.

That said, this is purely a test-tube finding and has never actually been reported in people. Rabeprazole is also a pretty forgiving medicine, so the real-world risk looks very low. A cup or two of hibiscus tea is unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using strong hibiscus supplements daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

Hibiscus sabdariffa is a tart, cranberry-flavored plant most often consumed as a tea, and its best-studied use is for mildly lowering blood pressure. Evidence for other uses is limited, and while hibiscus tea is generally well tolerated in food amounts, concentrated supplements should be used cautiously and avoided in pregnancy. About Rabeprazole

What Is Rabeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Aciphex, Aciphex Sprinkle

Rabeprazole delayed-release tablets treat a range of acid-related conditions in adults, including healing and maintenance of erosive or ulcerative GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), symptomatic GERD, duodenal ulcers, and pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. They are also used alongside antibiotics (amoxicillin and clarithromycin) to eradicate H. pylori bacteria and reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer coming back.

In adolescents 12 years and older, rabeprazole delayed-release tablets are approved for short-term treatment of symptomatic GERD. Both AcipHex and Rabeprazole Sodium delayed-release tablets share this indication set for adults and adolescents 12 and older.
