Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Duavee works by adding estrogen back into your body to ease menopause symptoms like hot flashes and to help protect your bones. Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is thought to push estrogen in an anti-estrogen direction and may nudge how your liver processes estrogen. In theory, that could work against what Duavee is trying to do, so you might notice your hot flashes or night sweats creeping back, or get less of the bone-protecting benefit over time.

I want to be honest about the strength here: this concern comes mostly from lab and animal studies, not solid human trials, so it's a possible issue, not a proven one. Everyday broccoli and cabbage on your plate aren't the worry; concentrated I3C supplements are. Before adding one, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

About Estrogen and Bazedoxifene

What Is Estrogen and Bazedoxifene Used For?

Brand name: Duavee

  • Estrogen and bazedoxifene tablets are used to treat hot flashes (sudden feelings of warmth, especially in the face, neck, and chest) in women who are experiencing menopause (stage of life when menstrual periods become less frequent and stop and women may experience other symptoms and body changes). Estrogen and bazedoxifene tablets are also used to prevent osteoporosis (condition in which the bones become thin and weak and break easily) in women who have undergone menopause. Estrogen is in a class of medications called hormones and bazedoxifene is in a class of medications called estrogen agonist–antagonists. Estrogen works by replacing estrogen that is normally produced by the body. Bazedoxifene is used to block the action of estrogen on the lining of the uterus, decreasing the risk of overgrowth that may lead to cancer.
