Jambolan and Hydrochlorothiazide, Valsartan

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Hydrochlorothiazide, Valsartan

Hydrochlorothiazide, Valsartan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Jambolan interacts with.

There is some in vitro evidence that jambolan can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, concomitant use of jambolan with CYP2C9 substrates may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with your Diovan HCT (that's valsartan plus hydrochlorothiazide). Valsartan is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, and lab-dish studies suggest jambolan might slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let a little more valsartan build up in your body, which might nudge its effects up. With a stronger blood pressure response, you could feel more lightheaded or dizzy, especially when standing up quickly.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube work, not from people, so we really don't know if it matters in real life. Eating the fruit is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're considering a concentrated jambolan supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Jambolan

What is Jambolan?

  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset and diarrhea
  • Sore throat and mouth health
  • Antimicrobial
  • General antioxidant support

Jambolan (Syzygium cumini), also called Java plum or black plum, is a tropical fruit tree traditionally used for blood sugar and digestive complaints. Human evidence for these uses is limited and not strong, so it should not replace proven treatments like diabetes medication. The fruit is safe as food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
