Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine

Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Jequirity interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that constituents of jequirity beans can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, jequirity might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the piece that matters for your Excedrin: the aspirin in it already thins your blood a little by keeping platelets from clumping together. Lab studies hint that compounds in jequirity beans may do the same thing. Put the two together and, at least on paper, you could bleed or bruise more easily, see nosebleeds, or notice cuts that take longer to stop. The caffeine and acetaminophen parts aren't really involved here.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's theoretical, based only on test-tube work, not on real people. The bigger issue is that jequirity seeds contain abrin, a genuine poison, so this isn't something I'd ever recommend taking at all. Please run any plans by your pharmacist or doctor first.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

First, a bigger-picture safety point: jequirity seeds contain abrin, a potent poison closely related to ricin. This plant is genuinely dangerous and should not be taken as a supplement at all, so the real concern here goes well beyond any drug interaction.

On the interaction itself, the only evidence comes from lab (test-tube) studies suggesting jequirity may slow down CYP3A4, an enzyme that helps clear the caffeine portion of Excedrin. In theory, that could let caffeine linger a bit longer, possibly meaning more jitteriness, a racing heart, or trouble sleeping. But this is purely theoretical and rated unlikely. The acetaminophen and aspirin parts aren't meaningfully affected. Bottom line: please don't use jequirity, and check with your pharmacist or doctor with any questions.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.
