Atazanavir, Cobicistat falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Before anything else, I have to be honest with you: jequirity seeds are genuinely poisonous. They contain abrin, a toxin in the same family as ricin, so this plant should never be taken as a supplement no matter what other medicines you're on.

On paper, the interaction itself is mild. Lab studies (test tube only, not people) suggest jequirity may slow down the CYP3A4 enzyme. Your Evotaz already leans on that pathway, and cobicistat is in there specifically to block CYP3A4 and keep atazanavir levels up. So in theory, adding another blocker could push atazanavir a bit higher, which might mean more nausea, headache, or that yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) atazanavir is known for. The evidence here is weak and the real danger is the toxin, not the interaction. Please don't use jequirity, and talk with your pharmacist about anything new.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

What Is Atazanavir and Cobicistat Used For?

Brand name: Evotaz

Evotaz (atazanavir/cobicistat) is used to treat HIV-1 infection. It must always be taken together with other antiretroviral medicines — it is not a complete regimen on its own. It is approved for adults and for pediatric patients who weigh at least 35 kg.

In patients who have been on HIV treatment before (treatment-experienced), how well Evotaz works depends on how much resistance to protease inhibitors the virus has already developed. Your prescriber will review this before starting you on Evotaz.
