Rifabutin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Let me be upfront here: the bigger issue with jequirity isn't how it mixes with rifabutin, it's that jequirity seeds contain abrin, a poison in the same family as ricin. It simply should not be taken as a supplement at all, period.

As for the interaction itself, lab studies suggest jequirity may slow down the CYP3A4 enzyme that helps clear rifabutin from your body. In theory, that could let rifabutin build up a bit, which might mean more of its usual side effects like nausea, an upset stomach, or harmless orange-red discoloration of urine and tears. But this is only test-tube evidence, rated unlikely and minor. Honestly, the real concern is the toxin. Please don't use jequirity, and check with your pharmacist or doctor about anything you take alongside rifabutin.

What Is Rifabutin Used For?

Brand name: Mycobutin

Rifabutin capsules are used to prevent disseminated MAC (Mycobacterium avium complex) disease — a serious bacterial infection that can spread throughout the body — in patients with advanced HIV infection.

It is not approved to treat active tuberculosis (TB), and it must not be used alone in patients who have active TB, as this can lead to antibiotic resistance.
