Roflumilast falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the short version: your body partly uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear roflumilast. In a lab dish, jequirity extract slowed this enzyme down. The theory is that if you slowed that breakdown, roflumilast could build up a bit and you might notice more of its usual side effects, things like nausea, diarrhea, headache, trouble sleeping, or weight loss.

That said, this is only test-tube data, the interaction is rated minor and unlikely, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger issue is jequirity itself. Its seeds contain abrin, a severe poison with no proven benefit, so please don't take it at all. If you ever have questions about roflumilast, your pharmacist or doctor is happy to help.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

About Roflumilast

What Is Roflumilast Used For?

Brand names: Daliresp, Zoryve

Daliresp and roflumilast tablets are used to reduce the risk of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) flare-ups in adults with severe COPD linked to chronic bronchitis who have had flare-ups in the past. They are not rescue inhalers and will not relieve a sudden breathing attack.

Zoryve cream is used topically to treat plaque psoriasis (adults and children 2+) and mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children as young as 2. Zoryve topical foam is used to treat seborrheic dermatitis (adults and children 9+) and plaque psoriasis of the scalp and body (adults and children 12+).
