Sertraline falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

First things first: jequirity seeds are genuinely poisonous (they contain abrin, a toxin in the same family as ricin), so I'd steer clear of them entirely, separate from any drug question. On the interaction itself, the concern is only theoretical. In a lab dish, jequirity extract slowed down CYP3A4, one of the liver enzymes that helps clear sertraline (Zoloft). Sertraline is active as-is, not a prodrug, so blocking that enzyme could in theory let a bit more build up.

If that happened, you might notice more of sertraline's usual effects, like nausea, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or headache. But this comes only from test-tube data, never people, so it's very unlikely to matter in real life. The real takeaway is to avoid jequirity, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any supplement.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

About Sertraline

What Is Sertraline Used For?

Brand name: Zoloft

Sertraline treats a range of mental health conditions. All formulations are approved for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The oral solution (including Zoloft oral solution) and several tablet formulations are also approved for panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

For OCD specifically, the capsule formulations and some tablet products are approved for use in adults and children aged 6 and older. Sertraline hydrochloride tablets (plain, not film-coated) are approved for OCD in pediatric patients as well. However, sertraline is not approved for major depressive disorder in children — only in adults.
