Magnesium can form insoluble complexes with tetracyclines in the gut and decrease their absorption and antibacterial activity. Advise patients to take these drugs 1 hour before or 2 hours after magnesium supplements.

Here's some good news if you're getting eravacycline (Xerava) for a belly infection: this one is given as an IV infusion in a hospital or clinic, not as a pill you swallow. The classic magnesium concern with tetracyclines is that magnesium can grab onto the antibiotic in your stomach and form a clump your gut can't absorb well, which weakens the drug. That gut-binding problem really applies to oral tetracyclines.

Since eravacycline goes straight into your vein, it skips the stomach, so a magnesium supplement isn't expected to block it the same way. Still, this interaction is on file for the whole tetracycline family, and the evidence here is fairly basic. If you take magnesium for any reason, just mention it to your nurse, pharmacist, or doctor so they can confirm the timing is fine for you.

What Is Eravacycline Injection Used For?

Brand name: Xerava

Xerava (eravacycline) is used to treat complicated intra-abdominal infections (serious infections inside the abdomen, such as those following bowel problems or surgery) in adults 18 and older. It targets a range of bacterial types, including E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus species, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacteroides species, and several others identified by lab testing.

Xerava is not approved for complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI). It should only be used when a bacterial infection is proven or strongly suspected — using antibiotics unnecessarily contributes to antibiotic resistance.
