Magnesium and Omadacycline (Oral)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Omadacycline (Oral)

Omadacycline (Oral) falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Magnesium interacts with.

Magnesium decreases absorption of tetracyclines.
Magnesium can form insoluble complexes with tetracyclines in the gut and decrease their absorption and antibacterial activity. Advise patients to take these drugs 1 hour before or 2 hours after magnesium supplements.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical issue with taking magnesium and oral omadacycline (Nuzyra) at the same time. Magnesium loves to grab onto tetracycline-type antibiotics in your stomach and gut, forming a clump that your body can't absorb well. The result is that less of your antibiotic actually gets into your bloodstream, which means it may not fight your infection as strongly as it should.

This isn't a dangerous reaction, it's more of a treatment problem. If the drug gets blocked, your infection could linger or come back. The easy fix most pharmacists recommend is spacing them out: take your omadacycline at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after any magnesium supplement or magnesium-containing antacid. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure how to time your doses.

About Omadacycline Injection

What Is Omadacycline Injection Used For?

Brand name: Nuzyra

Nuzyra (omadacycline) injection is used in adults to treat two types of serious bacterial infections: community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) — a lung infection picked up outside of a hospital — and acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI), which include serious skin infections such as those caused by MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).

Nuzyra works only against bacterial infections. It is not effective against viral illnesses like the flu or common cold. Your doctor will prescribe it only when a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, to help prevent the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
