Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about this combo: it's really about your skin and the sun, not how your body breaks down the medicine. This cold-and-pain combo (Rhinogesic) contains salicylamide, which can fall into the group of medicines that make some people more sensitive to sunlight. Masterwort contains natural compounds called furanocoumarins that do the same thing.

Put them together and the worry is an additive effect, meaning your skin could sunburn faster or react more strongly to UV light than usual. I'll be honest with you: this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not strong real-world proof. Still, if you use both, be smart about sunscreen and covering up, and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Acetaminophen, Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine, Salicylamide page

“I would slow down before pairing supplements with Rhinogesic (acetaminophen, chlorpheniramine, phenylephrine, salicylamide). Each part of this cold remedy opens a different door to trouble, so supplements can collide with it from several directions at once.”

What is Masterwort?

Masterwort
  • Digestive upset
  • Mild anxiety and tension
  • Skin complaints
  • Respiratory and cough relief
  • Traditional tonic

Masterwort (Heracleum sphondylium), a plant in the carrot family, has a long folk-medicine history for digestion, nerves, and skin. Modern scientific evidence to support these uses is very limited, and the plant can cause skin reactions to sunlight, so use it cautiously and talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
