Here's the thing to know with maprotiline (Ludiomil) and masterwort: this isn't about how your body breaks the drug down. It's about your skin. Masterwort contains furanocoumarins, the same compounds that make some people more prone to sunburn. Maprotiline can also make your skin a little more sensitive to sunlight on its own.

Put them together and you may burn faster or react more strongly to sun than you'd expect, even on a mild day. I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how both work, not something proven in big studies, so don't panic. Still, if you use both, be smart with sunscreen, hats, and shade, and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

  • Maprotiline is used to treat depression, bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods), and anxiety. Maprotiline is in a class of medications called tetracyclic antidepressants. It works by increasing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain that are needed to maintain mental balance.
