Here's the thing to know about simeprevir (Olysio): it's one of those hepatitis C medicines that can make your skin much more sensitive to sunlight. Bad sunburns, rashes, and even blistering have been reported with it, sometimes after only modest sun exposure. Masterwort carries plant compounds called furanocoumarins that can do the very same thing, so stacking the two together could add up and leave your skin even quicker to burn.

This concern is based on how both work rather than on hard studies, so it's more of a sensible caution than a proven danger. Still, I'd play it safe: use good sun protection, cover up, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding masterwort while you're on simeprevir.

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
