Drug & supplement interaction

Melatonin + Desmopressin Acetate

Desmopressin Acetate brand names: DDAVP, Noctiva, Nocdurna.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Melatonin and Desmopressin Acetate in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Melatonin and Desmopressin Acetate

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Desmopressin Acetate and Melatonin in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Desmopressin Acetate

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Desmopressin Acetate is filed under a single classification — oral drugs. Melatonin has documented interactions with 18 drug classes — the most serious being anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate), anticonvulsants (moderate) and antidiabetes drugs (moderate) — and none of Desmopressin Acetate’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Melatonin and Desmopressin Acetate May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. 4 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

“Orally, melatonin may cause migraine-like headache or dizziness. Often these symptoms occur during the first few days of treatment and subside after a few days. Melatonin may also cause drowsiness or fatigue when taken orally. These symptoms appear to be more common if melatonin is taken in the morning or at very high doses (greater than 50 mg).”

Reported for Melatonin but not commonly for Desmopressin Acetate: dependence or withdrawal symptoms, reduced appetite, a change in sex drive and hallucinations.

Effects for Desmopressin Acetate come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Melatonin come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 3,776 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Desmopressin Acetate that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Melatonin in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy Possibly Unsafe

When used orally or parenterally in high doses or with frequent use. High doses of melatonin 75-300 mg daily seem to inhibit ovulation, causing a contraceptive effect. Advise pregnant patients and patients wishing to become pregnant to avoid using melatonin frequently or in high doses. There is insufficient reliable information available about the safety of melatonin in lower doses during pregnancy. Some research shows that taking melatonin 2 mg daily does not affect anterior pituitary hormone levels in females who are not pregnant; this suggests that low doses may not have a contraceptive effect. Other research shows that taking melatonin 3 mg daily during the follicle stimulating stage of in vitro fertilization does not negatively impact pregnancy rates. However, it is not known if melatonin is safe for use throughout pregnancy. Until more is known about the safety of melatonin, avoid using during pregnancy.

About Melatonin

What is Melatonin?

Melatonin
  • Trouble falling asleep (insomnia)
  • Jet lag
  • Delayed sleep phase syndrome
  • Non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder
  • Shift-work sleep problems
  • Sleep problems in some children with conditions like autism or ADHD

Melatonin is a hormone your body makes naturally to help control your sleep-wake cycle, and the supplement form is widely used to help with sleep timing problems and jet lag. The evidence is strongest for certain circadian (body-clock) disorders and is more mixed for everyday insomnia. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially for children or during pregnancy.

Hormone naturally made by the pineal gland; supplements are usually made synthetically · Tablets, capsules, gummies, sublingual (under-the-tongue) tablets, liquids, extended-release tablets

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Melatonin is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Melatonin record says about it on its own.

Melatonin: dosing

There is no single standardized dose of melatonin, and products vary widely in strength. Many people find that lower doses work as well as higher ones, and taking more does not always help more. Timing often matters as much as the amount, so for sleep timing problems and jet lag it is usually taken in the evening or before bedtime. The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and start with the lowest amount that helps.

About Desmopressin

What Is Desmopressin Used For?

Brand names: DDAVP, Noctiva, Nocdurna

Desmopressin treats central diabetes insipidus — a condition where the body doesn't make enough antidiuretic hormone (ADH), causing the kidneys to release far too much water. It's also used for temporary excessive urination and thirst that can follow head trauma or surgery near the pituitary gland.

It's also approved for primary nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting at night) and can be used alone or alongside behavioral approaches. Note: it does not work for nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, a different type of the condition.

Taking Melatonin and Desmopressin Acetate Together: Common Questions

Is it safe to take Melatonin with Desmopressin Acetate?
We do not list a known interaction between Melatonin and Desmopressin Acetate. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes. Desmopressin Acetate is filed under 1 classification, and Melatonin has documented interactions with 18 drug classes — none of Desmopressin Acetate's classifications are among them. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded in our dataset, so this describes how the check was run rather than guaranteeing safety.
Does Melatonin interact with any other medications?
Yes. Melatonin has 1,461 documented drug interactions in our database — Desmopressin Acetate is simply not one of them. If you take anything else, it is worth checking each one; they are all listed on this page.
