Melatonin and Natalizumab

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Natalizumab

Natalizumab falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Melatonin interacts with.

Theoretically, melatonin might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the idea behind this one. Natalizumab (Tysabri) works by calming down part of your immune system so it stops attacking the protective coating around your nerves in MS. Melatonin, on the other hand, may give your immune system a little nudge in the opposite direction. So in theory, melatonin could work against what Tysabri is trying to do, which might mean less control over your MS symptoms.

I'll be honest with you though: this is mostly a theoretical concern. We don't have strong human studies showing it actually causes flare-ups, and Tysabri isn't broken down by the liver enzymes melatonin affects, so it's not a metabolism clash. Many people use occasional melatonin for sleep without trouble. Still, since MS is serious, it's worth a quick chat with your neurologist or pharmacist before starting it regularly.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Natalizumab page

“Natalizumab (Tysabri) works by quieting an overactive immune system in multiple sclerosis and Crohn's disease, and that is exactly why this list of 70 supplements deserves real care rather than a shrug. Fifty-three of them, ashwagandha among the familiar names, are believed to stimulate immune function, which could work directly agains…”

About Melatonin

What is Melatonin?

Melatonin
  • Trouble falling asleep (insomnia)
  • Jet lag
  • Delayed sleep phase syndrome
  • Non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder
  • Shift-work sleep problems
  • Sleep problems in some children with conditions like autism or ADHD

Melatonin is a hormone your body makes naturally to help control your sleep-wake cycle, and the supplement form is widely used to help with sleep timing problems and jet lag. The evidence is strongest for certain circadian (body-clock) disorders and is more mixed for everyday insomnia. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially for children or during pregnancy.
