Here's the basic idea with periwinkle and clonidine. Clonidine already lowers your blood pressure by calming the signals that tighten your blood vessels and speed up your heart. Periwinkle contains a compound called vincamine that, at least in theory, can also relax blood vessels and nudge blood pressure down. Stack the two together and you could get more blood-pressure lowering than you bargained for.

In real life that might show up as dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand, tiredness, or a slow heartbeat. I'll be honest with you, this warning is mostly theoretical and based on how the plant behaves, not on strong human studies. Still, since you're treating blood pressure, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.

About Clonidine

What Is Clonidine Used For?

Brand name: Catapres

Clonidine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Several products — including Clonidine Hydrochloride tablets, Javadin oral solution, Nexiclon XR extended-release tablets, and Catapres-TTS skin patches — are approved for this use, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Extended-release formulations — including Onyda XR oral suspension and clonidine hydrochloride extended-release tablets (such as Kapvay) — are approved to treat ADHD in children and teenagers ages 6 to 17, either on their own or alongside stimulant medications. Separately, clonidine injection products (Duraclon and others) are used alongside opioid pain medicines to treat severe cancer pain that opioids alone cannot control adequately.
