Here's the gist: propranolol already lowers blood pressure and slows the heart rate. Periwinkle contains vincamine, which on its own can widen blood vessels and nudge blood pressure down. So if you stack the two, the worry is that their blood-pressure-lowering effects could add up. In an infant taking propranolol for a hemangioma, that might mean signs like unusual sleepiness, a slower heartbeat, cool or pale skin, or poor feeding.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern drawn from how these compounds work, not from solid human studies, so it isn't a sure thing. Still, periwinkle isn't something I'd give a baby, and these alkaloids can be toxic. Please run any supplement past your child's doctor or pharmacist first.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.

What Is Propranolol (Infantile Hemangioma) Used For?

Brand name: Hemangeol

This intravenous (IV) form of propranolol is used in hospital settings to treat serious, life-threatening heart rhythm problems. It works on several types of abnormal rhythms, including those that happen during anesthesia or are caused by drug toxicity.

Specific uses include fast heart rhythms coming from the upper chambers of the heart (supraventricular tachycardia), dangerous rhythms caused by too much digitalis in the body, and certain fast rhythms triggered by excess stress hormones (catecholamines) during surgery.
