Tiagabine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Tianeptine interacts with.

Tianeptine has sedative effects; high doses may have additive effects with other CNS depressants.
Higher doses of tianeptine have opioid like effects and may have additive effects with other sedative drugs. In one case report, a 42-year-old male presented with respiratory depression and aspiration pneumonia due to concomitant use of high-dose tianeptine and alprazolam.

Here's the concern with pairing these two. Tiagabine (Gabitril) is a seizure medication that already tends to make people drowsy, dizzy, and a bit unsteady on their feet. Tianeptine, especially in the high doses found in those over-the-counter 'gas station' products, can act like an opioid and pile sedation on top. Put them together and you may feel much more groggy, foggy, or weak, and in a worst-case situation breathing can slow down dangerously.

This isn't from a head-to-head study, it's a theoretical caution based on how both drugs calm the nervous system, so I don't want to alarm you. But I'd strongly steer clear of these tianeptine products and run this by your doctor or pharmacist before combining anything.

About Tiagabine

What Is Tiagabine Used For?

Brand name: Gabitril

Tiagabine hydrochloride tablets are approved as add-on (adjunctive) therapy for partial seizures in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is not used alone — it is always added to an existing seizure medication regimen.

Both the film-coated and standard tablet forms of tiagabine hydrochloride carry this same indication. The safety and effectiveness of tiagabine have not been established for any other condition.
