Here's the thing to keep in mind with Umckaloabo (also called Pelargonium sidoides) and thalidomide. Thalidomide partly works by calming down or modulating your immune system. Lab studies hint that this geranium root may do the opposite and nudge certain immune cells to become more active. In theory, that could push against what thalidomide is trying to do and make it work a little less well, whether you're taking it for multiple myeloma or for the skin and nerve symptoms of leprosy (ENL).

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based on test-tube research, not real patients. We don't have proof it actually causes problems. Still, thalidomide is a serious medication, so before adding this supplement, please run it by your oncologist, pharmacist, or doctor first.

Umckaloabo is a root extract from a South African geranium that is most studied for short-term relief of acute bronchitis and other respiratory infections. Some clinical research suggests it may help symptoms resolve a bit faster, but the quality of evidence is mixed and it is not a cure. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a chronic illness.

About Thalidomide

What Is Thalidomide Used For?

Brand name: Thalomid

Thalomid (thalidomide capsules) is approved for two uses. First, it is used in combination with dexamethasone to treat newly diagnosed multiple myeloma — a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow.

Second, Thalomid is used on its own to treat the skin symptoms of moderate to severe erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), a painful inflammatory reaction that can occur in people with leprosy. It can also be used as ongoing maintenance therapy to prevent ENL from coming back. Note: Thalomid is not approved as the sole treatment for ENL when moderate to severe nerve inflammation (neuritis) is also present.
