What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: a Barbed Skullcap Root Extract in dry form. Skullcap has been used traditionally to support relaxation and calm, though the evidence for most of those uses hasn't been firmly established.
The liquid formulation includes alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients to deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that barbed skullcap is effective for any of the conditions it's been studied for — epilepsy, stress, stroke, spasticity, contact dermatitis, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). All of those have been rated insufficient reliable evidence to rate.
That doesn't mean skullcap doesn't work; it means the data available to us isn't strong enough to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Skullcap is often used for short periods, but evidence on its safety is limited and product quality varies, so use it with care. The most commonly reported side effects when taken by mouth are cognitive impairment, digestive disturbances, and sedation.
At a 100 mg dose, adverse effects on the brain weren't seen in research; however, at 200 mg or higher, sedation and cognitive impairment appeared more likely. One person taking 350 mg three times daily for 2 weeks reported vivid dreams, though it's unclear if skullcap caused it.
Mild digestive issues showed up in roughly 9% of people taking the 350 mg three-times-daily dose over 2 weeks. The safety data advises against skullcap during pregnancy.
While breastfeeding, safety is unknown, so it's best to avoid it. If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before taking this.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check any CNS depressants you're on — that includes sleep aids, benzodiazepines (like diazepam), barbiturates, and opioids. These drugs can have additive sedating effects when combined with skullcap, raising the risk of drowsiness and cognitive impairment.
Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Barbed Skullcap may be worth considering if you're looking to support relaxation, but the evidence for its effectiveness hasn't been established. If you take any medications — especially sleep aids, benzodiazepines, opioids, or other sedating drugs — you need to check them against the interaction list here first.
Don't use it in pregnancy, and be cautious if breastfeeding. Talk to your pharmacist before you start.

Barbed Skullcap by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Barbed Skullcap by Herbal Terra can interact with medications, primarily those that depress your central nervous system (CNS depressants).
The main concern is skullcap's potential to add to the sedating effects of drugs like benzodiazepines (such as diazepam), barbiturates, opioids, and sleep aids. Animal and clinical research suggests skullcap itself causes sedation and cognitive impairment, so combining it with other CNS depressants could amplify drowsiness and mental dulling.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 248 individual medications. Given that number, it's essential you check your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs — including sleep aids and any sedating antihistamines — before you start this product.
We hold no interaction data for the alcohol, water, and glycerin in the formulation itself, but the liquid does contain alcohol, which can also add to CNS depression.
