Skullcap Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Skullcap against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Skullcap Flowering Top Extract made from fresh plant material. The liquid also contains water and alcohol as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Insufficient evidence
The evidence we hold on skullcap doesn't support its use for any of the conditions it's commonly marketed for—epilepsy, stress relief, stroke recovery, spasticity, contact dermatitis, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). For all of these, the data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether it works.
That doesn't mean it definitely doesn't work; it means we don't have strong enough research to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Skullcap is often used only for short stretches, but evidence on its safety is limited and product quality varies—so use it carefully. The most common side effects reported with oral use are sedation, cognitive impairment (trouble thinking clearly), and digestive upset.
A small number of people taking higher doses (350 mg three times daily) reported mild digestive disturbances. One person on that same dose reported vivid dreams, though it's unclear whether skullcap caused it.
During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data, so it's best avoided. While breastfeeding, safety is unknown, so avoid it as well.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist if you take CNS depressants: sedating antidepressants, benzodiazepines, sleep aids, opioid pain relievers, or anticonvulsants. Combining any of these with skullcap could increase sedation and cognitive impairment.
Also disclose any alcohol use, since skullcap may add to alcohol's depressant effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take any CNS depressants—sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medications, opioids, or drink alcohol—talk to your pharmacist before adding this product. The evidence for what skullcap actually does isn't established in our data.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are reasons to skip it.

Skullcap by Red Moon Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Red Moon Herbs Skullcap interacts with a significant class of medications.
The main concern is CNS depressants—drugs that slow down your brain and nervous system, such as benzodiazepines (like lorazepam), sleep aids, opioids, and alcohol. Skullcap can add to their sedating effect, which means you might feel much drowsier, have trouble thinking clearly, or have impaired judgment.
This is a Moderate-severity interaction.

Although we hold data for only one active ingredient in this product, that ingredient affects a large number of individual medications across multiple drug classes. Altogether, these interactions span 248 individual medications.
Because the interaction data we have is limited to CNS depressants, we can't rule out effects with other medication types. Use the medication checker on this page to run through your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs before you start.
