What’s inside
Full disclosure
Vinco's Brain/Memory formula contains 5 active ingredients: Vinpocetine, N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine Hydrochloride, Phosphatidyl Complex, Huperzia serrata Extract, and Bacopa monnieri Extract. Vinpocetine is a compound derived from the periwinkle plant thought to improve blood flow to the brain.
N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine (often called ALCAR) is an amino acid form of carnitine involved in energy production in brain cells. Huperzia serrata extract and Bacopa monnieri are plant-based ingredients traditionally used in memory and cognitive support formulas.
The product also contains inactive ingredients — gelatin capsule, rice flour, vegetable stearate, and silicon dioxide — to hold and deliver the formula.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for this product's ingredients is mixed. Vinpocetine is rated possibly effective for dementia, but the data for tinnitus, motion sickness, stroke, and chronic fatigue syndrome is insufficient to rate.
N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine shows possibly effective evidence for age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, alcohol use disorder, diabetic neuropathy, and depression. Bacopa monnieri has insufficient reliable evidence for Alzheimer disease, sexual dysfunction, ADHD, back pain, cognitive function, and cognitive impairment in our data.
Overall, the strongest evidence exists for a couple of the ingredients in specific conditions, but much of the formula's claimed benefit rests on ingredients we simply don't have solid trial data for.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Vinpocetine is generally well tolerated short-term, though long-term safety isn't firmly established. Most common side effects include anxiety, dizziness, headache, flushing, stomach discomfort, and sleep issues.
Rare serious side effects (like arrhythmias and seizures) have been reported. The FDA has specifically warned that people who are or could become pregnant should not use vinpocetine, and it's best avoided while breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data.
N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine is also generally well tolerated short-term. Common side effects are agitation, dry mouth, headache, insomnia, and reduced appetite; a metabolite can cause a fishy odor in urine, breath, and sweat.
It's best avoided in pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise. Bacopa is generally well tolerated in studies, with common side effects including abdominal cramps, diarrhea, dry mouth, headache, nausea, drowsiness, and vivid dreams.
Gastrointestinal issues occurred in 12–30% of trial participants. Bacopa should be avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding due to insufficient safety information.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin — Moderate risk of increased bleeding from both vinpocetine and the carnitine ingredient. If you take antidepressants or other serotonergic drugs, check first due to Moderate interaction potential from N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine.
Anyone on thyroid hormone replacement, liver-metabolized medications (especially those processed via CYP1A2, CYP2C19, CYP2C9, or CYP3A4), anticholinergic drugs, cholinergic drugs, or cevimeline should verify safety with a pharmacist. Use the medication checker on this page to search your specific drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This formula may be worth considering if you're interested in memory or cognitive support and have checked it with your exact medications — the ingredient list is substantial and the interaction potential is real. If you take blood thinners, antidepressants, thyroid medication, or anything processed through your liver, talk to your pharmacist before starting.
People who are or could become pregnant should not use this product. Your pharmacist can help you weigh whether the evidence for each ingredient matches your goals.

Brain/Memory with Huperzine A by Vinco Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Vinco's Brain/Memory with Huperzine A has documented interactions with a number of medication types across its active ingredients.
Vinpocetine is the source of the most serious concern: it may increase bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs — a Moderate severity interaction. This effect appears related to vinpocetine's ability to reduce how thick the blood is and decrease clotting-related cell behavior, though the specific risk with warfarin (Coumadin) is rated Minor.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine carries Moderate interactions with serotonergic drugs (antidepressants and related medications), potentially raising the risk of serotonin-related side effects including serotonin syndrome. It also theoretically increases the anticoagulant effects of warfarin and a similar drug called acenocoumarol (Sintrom), and may reduce how well thyroid hormone replacement works — all Moderate severity.
Bacopa monnieri extract has documented Moderate interactions with several medication classes processed through the liver's cytochrome P450 system (CYP1A2, CYP2C19, CYP2C9, and CYP3A4 substrates), which includes hundreds of common drugs. Bacopa also interacts Moderately with anticholinergic drugs (used for urinary or breathing issues), cholinergic drugs, cevimeline (Evoxac), and Minor interactions with thyroid hormone.
We could not check Phosphatidyl Complex or Huperzia serrata extract — no data on file for those. Altogether, these interactions span 1,041 individual medications.

Bacopa monnieri Extract
Anticholinergic Drugs
Theoretically, concurrent use might decrease the effectiveness of both agents.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.
Cevimeline (Evoxac)
Theoretically, bacopa might increase the effects and adverse effects of cevimeline.
In one case, a 58-year-old female taking cevimeline long-term for Sjogren syndrome experienced hyperhidrosis, malaise, nausea, and tachycardia shortly after taking a single dose of bacopa. Symptoms resolved after two days. Cevimeline is metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6 and CYP3A4, and researchers theorize that bacopa may have inhibited these isoenzymes. However, it is unclear if bacopa causes clinically significant inhibition of either CYP2D6 or CYP3A4.
Cholinergic Drugs
Theoretically, concurrent use of bacopa with other cholinergic drugs might have additive effects.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels. Theoretically, this could result in additive cholinergic effects when used with cholinergic drugs.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C19 enzymes. It is not known whether this is clinically significant.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
Research on the effect of bacopa extracts on CYP2C9 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C9, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, bacopa might have additive effects when used with thyroid hormone.
Animal research suggests that bacopa increases thyroxine (T4) levels in mice by about 40%.
Huperzia serrata Extract
Anticholinergic Drugs
In animal models, toothed clubmoss and huperzine A, an active constituent of toothed clubmoss, reversed cognitive deficits induced by scopolamine. Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and toothed clubmoss might decrease the effectiveness of toothed clubmoss or the anticholinergic drug.
Some anticholinergic drugs include atropine, benztropine (Cogentin), biperiden (Akineton), procyclidine (Kemadrin), and trihexyphenidyl (Artane).
Cholinergic Drugs
Huperzine A, a constituent of toothed clubmoss, has demonstrated acetylcholinesterase inhibitory properties. Theoretically, concurrent use of toothed clubmoss with cholinergic drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of cholinergic side effects.
Cholinergic drugs include bethanechol (Urecholine), donepezil (Aricept), echothiophate (Phospholine Iodide), edrophonium (Enlon, Reversol, Tensilon), neostigmine (Prostigmin), physostigmine (Antilirium), pyridostigmine (Mestinon, Regonol), succinylcholine (Anectine, Quelicin), and tacrine (Cognex).
Vinpocetine
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Vinpocetine might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Clinical research shows that vinpocetine decreases red blood cell aggregation, as well as plasma and whole blood viscosity. This effect has been seen with intravenous vinpocetine 1 mg/kg and oral vinpocetine 30 mg daily. Vinpocetine also seems to have antiplatelet effects.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, vinpocetine might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that vinpocetine weakly inhibits CYP2C9. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Vinpocetine might modestly increase the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin.
Clinical research shows that the combination of warfarin and vinpocetine leads to slight increases in prothrombin time and the area under the concentration curve for warfarin. However, these increases were small, and researchers suggest that this interaction is not likely to be clinically significant in most patients.
N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine Hydrochloride
Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)
Theoretically, acetyl-L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine, the parent compound of acetyl-L-carnitine, might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant that is similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation when L-carnitine was taken with acenocoumarol. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product. It is unclear if such an interaction would also occur with acetyl-L-carnitine.
Serotonergic Drugs
Theoretically, acetyl-L-carnitine might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders, when taken with serotonergic drugs.
Animal research shows that acetyl-L-carnitine can increase levels of serotonin in the brain.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, acetyl-L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. It is unclear if such an interaction would occur with acetyl-L-carnitine.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, acetyl-L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine, the parent compound of acetyl-L-carnitine, might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with acetyl-L-carnitine and warfarin.
