Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 to clear omeprazole. In lab-dish studies, bacopa seems to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that held true in people, omeprazole could linger longer and build up, which might mean a stronger effect or a higher chance of side effects like headache, nausea, gas, or diarrhea.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is, though. The evidence here comes only from test-tube work, not from real patients, so we genuinely don't know if it matters in everyday use. Omeprazole is also pretty forgiving, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you plan to take both regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the gist with bacopa and your omeprazole (Prilosec). In some lab dish studies, bacopa seemed to mildly slow down an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to break down omeprazole. If that slowdown actually happened in people, omeprazole could hang around a bit longer and build up slightly, which might mean a little more chance of side effects like headache, nausea, stomach upset, or diarrhea.

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.

What Is Omeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Prilosec, Zegerid, Losec

Omeprazole is used to treat a range of conditions where stomach acid causes problems. These include heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It can also be used alongside antibiotics to help get rid of an H. pylori infection — a bacteria that causes ulcers.

In more serious cases, omeprazole is used to manage conditions where the stomach produces far too much acid, such as pathologic hypersecretory conditions (rare medical disorders that cause extreme acid overproduction). It is approved for adults and children one year of age and older for GERD and erosive esophagitis.
