Krill Ultra contains 5 active ingredients. The omega-3 fatty acids are the main components—specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are the long-chain omega-3s your body uses for heart and brain health.
Astaxanthin is a red pigment compound from krill that acts as an antioxidant. The product also includes phospholipids (fat-like compounds that help your body absorb and use the omega-3s) and SuperbaBoost, which is a concentrated krill oil extract.
The capsule itself is made from gelatin with sorbitol, water, and vanillin as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
For dry eye, krill oil is rated possibly effective—meaning there's some evidence it may help, but it's not definitive. Astaxanthin has insufficient evidence for conditions like age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Krill oil also lacks sufficient evidence for aging skin, Alzheimer disease, cancer, high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), and cognitive function. In short, the data we hold doesn't establish strong evidence for most of the uses someone might consider this supplement for.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both krill oil and astaxanthin are generally well tolerated in studies. With krill oil, common side effects include bloating, decreased appetite, diarrhea, fishy burps, flatulence, heartburn, nausea, and stomach discomfort—usually milder than fish oil causes.
Headache, tiredness, and dizziness are rare. Astaxanthin may cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools; at higher doses, severe stomach pain has occurred in a small number of users.
For pregnancy, astaxanthin safety data are not sufficient, so it's best to avoid it during pregnancy. Krill oil also lacks reliable safety data in pregnancy—talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using.
The same applies to breastfeeding for both ingredients. Additionally, avoid krill oil if you have a shellfish allergy, and use caution if you have a bleeding disorder.

Before starting Krill Ultra, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners like warfarin or aspirin)—krill oil may raise bleeding risk at high doses. Also double-check if you're on antidiabetes medication, as krill oil might theoretically lower blood sugar further.
If you take any drugs metabolized by your liver (especially via CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 pathways), astaxanthin may theoretically reduce their effectiveness, though this hasn't been proven in humans.

Astaxanthin may theoretically decrease blood levels of drugs metabolized by two liver pathways: CYP3A4 substrates and CYP2B6 substrates, both rated Moderate severity. This effect comes from lab research showing astaxanthin induces these enzyme pathways in human liver cells, though it has not been documented in actual patients.
Krill oil also carries a moderate interaction with antidiabetes drugs, where theoretically taking it with blood-sugar-lowering medications might raise the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)—though limited research in people with type 2 diabetes shows mixed results.

Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, DHA may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Although some clinical evidence suggests that DHA might reduce collagen-stimulated platelet aggregation and thromboxane release, most clinical evidence suggests that DHA alone does not affect blood clotting. However, theoretically, when given in combination with EPA as fish oil, concomitant use with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (including aspirin) might increase risk of bleeding.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antidiabetes drugs might reduce the effects of these medications.
In people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking oral hypoglycemic medications, DHA seems to increase fasting blood glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Fish oils containing DHA can lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensives; use with caution.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, krill oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Taking high doses of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can modestly decrease platelet aggregation. Since krill oil also contains these fatty acids, taking high doses of krill oil might also inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, taking high doses of krill oil with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might increase the risk of bleeding. However, the omega-3 content of krill oil is much lower than that of fish oil.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking krill oil with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research in animals and humans shows that krill oil might lower blood glucose levels. However, a small study shows that taking krill oil does not reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, most of whom were taking antidiabetes drugs.
