Super Omega-3 Plus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Super Omega-3 Plus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Super Omega-3 Plus by Life Extension
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Super Omega-3 Plus has 8 active ingredients. The main ones are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) — omega-3 fatty acids from fish and krill oil that support heart and brain health.
The product also contains sesame seed lignan extract, natural astaxanthin (a carotenoid antioxidant), and polyphenols and olive extract compounds like hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein, all of which contribute antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Supporting these are phospholipids, which help your body absorb the omega-3s efficiently.
The rest of the capsule is made up of inactive ingredients like gelatin, glycerin, and beeswax.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence we hold shows sesame seed lignan extract is possibly effective for high blood pressure, but possibly ineffective for cough. For other uses—nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, HIV/AIDS-related wasting, Alzheimer disease, and anemia of chronic disease—the evidence is insufficient to rate.
For natural astaxanthin, the data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, or carpal tunnel syndrome. We hold no effectiveness data for the other ingredients in this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sesame seed lignan extract is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but sesame is a major allergen—allergic reactions can range from skin symptoms like hives and swelling to respiratory problems, and up to 0.5% of the U.S. population reports a sesame allergy. One clinical trial documented a case of diarrhea.
Natural astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety data are limited; adverse effects in trials included abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stool, with higher doses causing severe stomach pain in a small number of participants. The safety notes advise against natural astaxanthin during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient data.
For sesame, safety data on concentrated supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding are not well studied—talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before taking this product if you use antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medication), antidiabetes medication, medications broken down by your liver through the CYP2C9, CYP3A4, or CYP2B6 pathways, P-glycoprotein substrates, or tamoxifen (Nolvadex)—all have documented or theoretical interactions with ingredients in this supplement.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take blood pressure medication, antidiabetes drugs, or certain other prescription medications, check them against the interaction list below before starting this product. Sesame allergy is relatively common, so be alert for any skin or breathing changes.
Natural astaxanthin should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk with your pharmacist about whether this product fits your health profile.

Super Omega-3 Plus by Life Extension Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Super Omega-3 Plus by Life Extension contains sesame seed lignan extract and natural astaxanthin, both of which have documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is sesame's Moderate interaction with antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications) — sesame can lower blood pressure further, raising the risk of dangerously low pressure.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sesame also carries Moderate-severity interactions with antidiabetes drugs, which may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia); with CYP2C9 substrates, a group of medications your liver processes in a specific way that sesame may interfere with; and theoretically with tamoxifen (Nolvadex), a breast cancer medication, though this has not been reported in humans. Additionally, sesame has a Minor interaction with P-glycoprotein substrates, medications whose movement through your body could theoretically be altered by sesame compounds.
Natural astaxanthin carries Moderate interactions with two enzyme systems: CYP3A4 substrates and CYP2B6 substrates — drugs your liver breaks down through these pathways may become less effective, though again this hasn't been confirmed in humans.
We could not check several other ingredients in this product: eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, phospholipids, polyphenols, hydroxytyrosol/tyrosol, and verbascoside/oleuropein. Altogether, these interactions span 990 individual medications.

natural Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Sesame seed Lignan extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Taking sesame oil with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical studies show that sesame oil can decrease plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. Some clinical research in patients taking glibenclamide shows that using sesame oil or a blend of sesame oil and rice bran oil in place of other oil for cooking reduces plasma glucose more than glibenclamide alone. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Taking sesame oil with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical research shows that replacing other cooking oil with sesame oil can lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in patients with or without hypertension. There is also some evidence that sesame oil has additive effects in patients also taking atenolol, nifedipine, and/or hydrochlorothiazide. In patients using nifedipine, using a blend of sesame oil and rice bran oil for cooking reduces both SBP and DBP more than nifedipine alone.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, sesame might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro, sesame inhibits CYP2C9. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
Theoretically, sesame might interfere with tamoxifen.
In animal research, sesame seed reduces the tumor-inhibitory effect of tamoxifen by reducing apoptosis and increasing proliferation. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
P-Glycoprotein Substrates
Theoretically, sesame might alter the transport of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research suggests that sesamin, a constituent of sesame, can inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
