Phenelzine Sulfate falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Adrafinil interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk for serious adverse effects.
Adrafinil is a precursor to the stimulant prescription drug modafinil. Modafinil, and a related drug, armodafinil, have been associated with reports of serious adverse effects, such as hypertensive crisis and hyperthermia, when used in combination with MAOIs.

Here's the concern with pairing these two. Phenelzine (Nardil) is an older antidepressant called an MAOI, and these drugs are notoriously sensitive to anything that revs up the nervous system. Adrafinil itself is fairly inactive, but your liver turns it into modafinil, a wakefulness-promoting stimulant. Stacking a stimulant on top of an MAOI is where the worry comes in.

In theory, combining them could push blood pressure dangerously high (a hypertensive crisis) or cause overheating and agitation. I want to be honest: this is based on how these drugs work, not on a pile of real-world cases, so it's a cautionary flag rather than a proven danger. Still, because MAOIs leave so little room for error, please run this by your doctor or pharmacist before mixing them.

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
