Andrographis and Deflazacort

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Deflazacort

Deflazacort falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Andrographis interacts with.

Theoretically, andrographis might interfere with the effects of immunosuppressive drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that andrographolide has immunostimulant activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about deflazacort (Emflaza): it's a corticosteroid that works partly by calming down the immune system. Andrographis seems to do the opposite, with lab studies hinting it can rev the immune system up. So in theory, taking the two together could work against each other and blunt some of deflazacort's benefit in conditions like Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

I want to be honest with you, though, this concern comes only from test tube and animal research, not from real people. We simply don't have strong evidence that it matters in everyday life. Still, since deflazacort is doing important work, I'd loop in your doctor or pharmacist before adding andrographis rather than guessing.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Deflazacort page

“Deflazacort (Emflaza) is a corticosteroid, best known for treating Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and the liver clears it through the CYP3A4 enzyme, so supplements that block or speed up that enzyme can genuinely shift how much of the drug reaches the blood. That earns this page real caution.”

  • Fever
  • Immune support
  • Digestive complaints

Andrographis is a bitter Asian herb traditionally used for colds, flu, and infections, and some studies suggest it may ease cold symptoms and shorten how long they last.
