Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the idea worth knowing if you're on temsirolimus (Torisel) for kidney cancer. This medicine partly works by calming the immune system and slowing how cancer cells multiply. Andrographis, on the other hand, has shown signs in lab and animal studies of revving the immune system up. So in theory, the herb could push in the opposite direction and blunt some of what temsirolimus is trying to do.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's based on test-tube and animal research, not real patients, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Still, with a cancer drug this important, I wouldn't add andrographis on your own. Please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Temsirolimus page

“Temsirolimus (Torisel), an infusion for advanced kidney cancer, deserves genuine wariness around supplements. Most interactions on record involve herbs that alter CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that clears the drug, so a capsule can quietly raise its levels and side effects or thin out its anticancer effect.”

  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Immune support
  • Digestive complaints

Andrographis is a bitter Asian herb traditionally used for colds, flu, and infections, and some studies suggest it may ease cold symptoms and shorten how long they last.
