Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Aspirin, Diphenhydramine, Phenylpropanolamine
Aspirin, Diphenhydramine, Phenylpropanolamine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Bacopa interacts with.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The piece of this combo product that matters here is the diphenhydramine, the antihistamine that helps with sleep and runny nose. It works partly by blocking acetylcholine, one of the brain's chemical messengers. Bacopa may do the opposite, nudging acetylcholine levels up. So in theory the two could work against each other, possibly making the diphenhydramine a little less effective at calming a cough, drying secretions, or helping you drift off.
I'll be honest with you: this is a theoretical concern based on how each one behaves, not something proven in real people. The aspirin and phenylpropanolamine pieces aren't really involved. It's nothing to panic over, but if you take bacopa regularly, mention it to your pharmacist so they can keep an eye on things.
