Bacopa and Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone, Ferrous Fumarate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Bacopa interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone, Ferrous Fumarate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Bacopa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone, Ferrous Fumarate

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone, Ferrous Fumarate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Bacopa interacts with.

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the combo of ethinyl estradiol, norethindrone, and iron). The concern on file is that bacopa might slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which can play a small role in handling estrogen. In theory, that could let estrogen levels run a touch higher, which sometimes means more of the usual estrogen-related complaints like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or breakthrough spotting.

Honestly, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. The evidence comes only from lab and test-tube studies, and even those disagree on whether bacopa does much of anything to this enzyme in real people. There's no good sign your pill would stop working. Still, if you plan to take bacopa regularly, give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up so they know your full list.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone, Ferrous Fumarate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Your birth control pill contains two hormones (ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone) that your liver processes using an enzyme called CYP3A4. Here's the theoretical concern: some lab tests suggest bacopa might slow that enzyme down a little. If that happened in your body, the hormones could build up slightly, which could mean a bit more of the usual side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, or spotting.

I want to be honest with you though, this is very weak evidence. It comes from test-tube studies only, and even those disagree, with some showing no meaningful effect at all. There are no real-world reports of bacopa causing problems with the pill. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but it's always smart to mention any supplement to your pharmacist or doctor.

About Bacopa

What is Bacopa?

Bacopa
  • Memory and cognitive support
  • Anxiety and stress
  • ADHD symptoms
  • Age-related memory decline
  • General brain health

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
