Progestin, Oral Contraceptive falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bacopa interacts with.

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Your birth control pill, Slynd (drospirenone), is processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. There's a theory that bacopa could slow this enzyme down a bit, which in turn might let a little more of the hormone build up in your body. If that happened, you could notice more of the usual progestin side effects, like breast tenderness, mood changes, headaches, bloating, or some spotting.

Here's the reassuring part: this is based only on early lab studies, and even those disagree with each other. There's no solid human evidence that bacopa actually changes how Slynd works, and your pill is not a prodrug, so it doesn't need this enzyme to do its job. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before starting bacopa.

  • Progestin-only (drospirenone) oral contraceptives are used to prevent pregnancy. Progestin is a female hormone. It works by preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation) and changing the cervical mucus and the lining of the uterus. Progestin-only oral contraceptives are a very effective method of birth control, but they do not prevent the spread of of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS]) and other sexually transmitted diseases.
