ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Ergotamine, Belladonna, Phenobarbital
Ergotamine, Belladonna, Phenobarbital falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Belladonna interacts with.
Belladonna has anticholinergic activity and increases the activity of anticholinergic drugs.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's a quirk worth noticing: the medication you asked about (brand names like Bellaspas or Bellamine) already contains belladonna as one of its ingredients, alongside ergotamine and phenobarbital. So if you add a separate belladonna supplement on top of it, you're essentially doubling up on the same anticholinergic alkaloids.
Because belladonna blocks acetylcholine, stacking more of it can amplify the typical anticholinergic side effects: dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, trouble urinating, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, and confusion, especially in older adults. This concern is based on how these drugs work rather than firm studies, but the logic is solid since the active compounds overlap. Please don't add a belladonna product without first checking with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ergotamine, Belladonna, Phenobarbital page
“Sedation stacking is the risk I would put first with ergotamine, belladonna, and phenobarbital (Bellamine, Bellaspas). Phenobarbital is a barbiturate, sedating on its own, and 78 of the ingredients on this page deepen that drowsiness, alcohol most seriously of all.”

What is Belladonna?
- Digestive cramps and spasms
- Cold and flu symptoms (homeopathic)
- Teething pain (homeopathic)
- Motion sickness and nausea
- Excess sweating or secretions
- Pain and muscle spasm (topical plasters)
Belladonna is a highly toxic plant whose alkaloids (like atropine and scopolamine) are powerful medicines used only in carefully controlled, regulated forms. Never self-treat with belladonna without guidance from a doctor or pharmacist.
