Why this applies to Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen

Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen falls under NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDs) — the group Chromium interacts with.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Advil Dual Action (which pairs ibuprofen with acetaminophen) and a chromium supplement. The interaction goes in one direction only: the ibuprofen part, like other NSAIDs, may nudge your body to absorb and hang onto a bit more chromium. The painkillers themselves don't change. So this is really about chromium levels creeping up slightly, not about ibuprofen or acetaminophen working differently.

The good news is this is rated minor and is only theoretical, based on how the drugs behave on paper rather than real cases of harm. For most people taking ibuprofen now and then, it's nothing to lose sleep over. If you take chromium daily and use this medicine often, just mention it to your pharmacist so someone keeps an eye on things.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen page

“Advil Dual Action pairs ibuprofen, an NSAID with built-in stomach-bleeding risk, and acetaminophen, which the liver processes, so this interaction list deserves a careful read, not a skim. Most of the entries can add to bleeding risk, while smaller clusters put extra strain on the liver or kidneys.”

About Chromium

What is Chromium?

Chromium
  • Blood sugar support in type 2 diabetes
  • Weight loss and appetite control
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Cholesterol and lipid support
  • General nutritional supplement

Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in how the body handles sugar and fat. Some studies suggest it may modestly help blood sugar control in certain people with type 2 diabetes, but results are mixed and the effect on weight loss is small and uncertain. For most healthy people who eat a varied diet, supplements are not needed; check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
