Here's the simple version: corydalis contains berberine, a compound that some studies show can nudge blood sugar a little lower on its own. Since metformin is already working to bring your glucose down, stacking the two together could, in theory, push your blood sugar lower than you intended. That might show up as feeling shaky, sweaty, dizzy, irritable, or unusually tired.

I want to be honest about the evidence here, though. This concern is theoretical, based on how berberine behaves rather than on solid studies of people taking corydalis with metformin. Metformin alone rarely causes serious lows, so the risk is modest. Still, if you'd like to try corydalis, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your sugar readings.

Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might increase the therapeutic and adverse effects of metformin.
Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine. In vitro and animal studies show that berberine can increase the systemic exposure and half-life of metformin, potentially increasing metformin's effects and side effects. This interaction seems to be most apparent when berberine is administered 2 hours prior to metformin. Taking berberine and metformin at the same time does not appear to increase systemic exposure to metformin. It is unclear if Corydalis yanhusuo might have this same effect.

Here's the gist for Corydalis yanhusuo taken alongside your metformin. This herb contains berberine, and in lab and animal studies berberine slowed how the body clears metformin, letting more of it build up in the bloodstream. In theory, that could nudge metformin's effects upward, both the good (lower blood sugar) and the unwanted (nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, or a higher chance of low blood sugar if you take it with other diabetes meds).

I want to be honest: this is theoretical, based on pharmacology and berberine, not on Corydalis itself, so we don't really know if it plays out in people. The effect mostly showed up when berberine was taken a couple hours before metformin. Please don't change anything on your own. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them so they can keep an eye on your sugars.

Metformin — available as tablets, extended-release tablets, and an oral solution — is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, always as part of a plan that includes diet and exercise.

Metformin hydrochloride tablets and the oral solution are approved for adults and children 10 years and older. Extended-release tablets (including Fortamet, Glumetza, and Metformin Hydrochloride Extended Release) are approved for adults only. Riomet (oral solution) is approved for adults and children 10 years and older.
