First things first: jequirity isn't really a supplement you should be taking at all. Its seeds contain abrin, a potent poison similar to ricin, so this is more of a poisoning concern than a routine interaction. Please keep it away from your medicine cabinet entirely.

That said, here's the theory behind the interaction. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down both the estrogen and the bazedoxifene in Duavee. Lab studies suggest jequirity can slow that enzyme down, which could let these hormones build up a bit. In theory that might mean more estrogen-type effects, like breast tenderness, bloating, or spotting. But this is only test-tube data, rated unlikely and minor, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If you have any jequirity exposure, call your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Estrogen and Bazedoxifene Used For?

Brand name: Duavee

  • Estrogen and bazedoxifene tablets are used to treat hot flashes (sudden feelings of warmth, especially in the face, neck, and chest) in women who are experiencing menopause (stage of life when menstrual periods become less frequent and stop and women may experience other symptoms and body changes). Estrogen and bazedoxifene tablets are also used to prevent osteoporosis (condition in which the bones become thin and weak and break easily) in women who have undergone menopause. Estrogen is in a class of medications called hormones and bazedoxifene is in a class of medications called estrogen agonist–antagonists. Estrogen works by replacing estrogen that is normally produced by the body. Bazedoxifene is used to block the action of estrogen on the lining of the uterus, decreasing the risk of overgrowth that may lead to cancer.
