Why this applies to Rivaroxaban

Rivaroxaban falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Jequirity interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that constituents of jequirity beans can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, jequirity might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

First things first: jequirity seeds are genuinely poisonous and shouldn't be taken at all. The abrin they contain is a deadly toxin, so this isn't a supplement I'd ever recommend, with or without any medication.

Setting that aside, here's the theoretical concern with Xarelto (rivaroxaban). Rivaroxaban is already a blood thinner that blocks a clotting factor (Factor Xa) to keep clots from forming. Lab studies hint that compounds in jequirity may also keep platelets from sticking together. Stacking two things that discourage clotting could, in theory, add up and raise your bleeding risk, meaning easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or harder-to-stop bleeding. This is only test-tube evidence, not proven in people. Please don't take jequirity, and check with your pharmacist or doctor about anything you add.

Rivaroxaban also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

First things first: jequirity seeds are genuinely poisonous, so this isn't something you should ever be taking as a supplement in the first place. Setting that safety issue aside, here's the theory behind the interaction. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear rivaroxaban (Xarelto) from your body. Lab studies suggest jequirity can block that enzyme. If that happened in a real person, rivaroxaban could build up and thin your blood more than intended, raising the chance of bruising, nosebleeds, or more serious bleeding.

That said, this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's mostly theoretical. The real takeaway is to steer clear of jequirity entirely, and always check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding anything new alongside Xarelto.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

About Rivaroxaban

What Is Rivaroxaban Used For?

Brand name: Xarelto

Rivaroxaban tablets are used to reduce the risk of stroke in adults with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm), treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT, a blood clot in a vein) and pulmonary embolism (PE, a blood clot in the lungs), and lower the chances of these clots coming back. They also help prevent clots after hip or knee replacement surgery, protect hospitalized patients at risk for clots, and — in combination with aspirin — reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with coronary artery disease (CAD) or peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Rivaroxaban tablets are also approved for treating VTE (venous thromboembolism, blood clots in veins) and preventing recurrence in pediatric patients from birth to under 18 years, and for preventing clots in children aged 2 and older with congenital heart disease after the Fontan procedure. Rivaroxaban for oral suspension (available as Rivaroxaban Granule and Xarelto oral suspension) is specifically indicated for these two pediatric uses.
