Here's the practical issue with Fosamax Plus D (alendronate plus vitamin D). Alendronate is already very poorly absorbed, only a tiny fraction gets into your body even under perfect conditions. Magnesium is a mineral that can bind to alendronate in your stomach and gut, so taking them too close together can block even more of the alendronate from being absorbed. That means your bone-strengthening medicine may simply not work as well, which matters when the whole point is protecting against fractures.

The good news is the fix is easy. Alendronate should already be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with plain water, then wait before eating or taking anything else. Keep your magnesium at least 2 hours apart from your dose. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure how to space them.
