Moringa and Silodosin

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Moringa interacts with whole categories of medication. Silodosin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Moringa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Silodosin

Silodosin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa might increase or decrease levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some in vitro research suggests that moringa inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). However, other in vitro research suggests that moringa extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes. A pharmacokinetic study in patients with HIV shows no change in the pharmacokinetics of nevirapine, which is partially metabolized by CYP3A4, when administered concomitantly with moringa leaf powder 1.85 grams daily for 14 days.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with moringa and your silodosin (Rapaflo). Silodosin is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and it is an active drug, not a prodrug that needs switching on. So if moringa slowed that enzyme down, silodosin could build up and you might notice more of its usual side effects, like dizziness, lightheadedness when standing, a stuffy nose, or that 'dry' ejaculation many men report. If moringa instead sped the enzyme up, the medicine could work a little less well.

The honest truth? This is mostly lab-dish research, and it points both directions, so we really don't know. Everyday culinary amounts of moringa are unlikely to matter much. If you want to take concentrated moringa capsules regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Silodosin also falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, moringa leaf extract might increase the levels and clinical effects of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research shows that moringa leaf extract inhibits renal P-glycoprotein transport activity. So far, this reaction has not been reported in humans.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS

Here's the simple version. Silodosin (Rapaflo) gets shuttled around your body partly by a transporter called P-glycoprotein. Lab studies suggest moringa leaf extract may slow that transporter down. In theory, that could let a little more silodosin hang around, which might nudge its effects up a notch. With an alpha-blocker like this, that usually shows up as dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand up, a stuffy or runny nose, or in some men, unusual ejaculation.

I want to be honest with you, though: this is based only on test-tube research, and it has not actually been seen in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Just let your pharmacist or doctor know you're using moringa so they can keep an eye on how you're feeling.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

These ratings are for information only. Never start, stop, or otherwise change your therapy before speaking with your provider.

By severity: 3 major · 104 moderate · 38 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Silodosin page

“Grapefruit is the first risk I'd flag for anyone taking silodosin (Rapaflo) for an enlarged prostate. It blocks CYP3A4, the enzyme that clears silodosin, so blood levels rise, and higher levels mean more dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting when standing.”

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.

About Silodosin

What Is Silodosin Used For?

Brand name: Rapaflo

Silodosin capsules are approved to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that can make urination difficult, weak, or frequent. It helps ease those urinary symptoms so urine can flow more freely.

It is important to know that silodosin is not approved for treating high blood pressure, even though it affects certain receptors that can influence blood pressure.
